coating bullets with Boron Nitride?

Post by hawcer on Fri May 20, 2011 10:00 am

Any one used Boron Nitride coated bullets? it's supposed to be as good as if not better than Moly coating with less mess.

Here is a good article on it...

http://home.comcast.net/~jesse99/hex_boron_nitride_coating.html

I saw someone pawning this stuff on evil-bay for bullet coating and had to check into it.

I am curious on the effects it will have in the barrel....like moly does. Does it treat a clean barrel with the first few shots before the accuracy starts to show? Does the barrel have to be scrubbed clean before non-coated bullets can be used again?

Never heard of it before...so curiosity is getting the best of me.

If anyone is interested, it can be purchased for $52.00 a pound here:

http://sandblastingabrasives.com/hexagonal-boron-nitride-powder-order-page-781.html

They recommend the -5 micron for bullet coating. It's a tumble application, just like Moly.

I am interested in this stuff if anyone wants to go in an a lbs of it and split it up. I looked it to HBN awhile back but it had to be ordered in larger quanities and from Canada. Not that its a big investment.
I would entertain the Idea of ordering this stuff and spliting in into smaller jars if anyone here in wanting too.
Let me know if your interested and I'll order a pound or 2 depending on how many would like to try it.
With 7000 gr's in a pound, I could divide out into 500 or 1000gr containers.
Let me know and I'll get this going.

My company actually offers reasonable quantities of BN powder for trial through a hobby company known as TAI Lubricants. They can be reached at 302.326.0200, and the contact there is Tom Madden. We suggest our grade HCPL for tumbling bullets and our grade AC6111 for coating gun barrels. As for instructions on these two activities, you can easily Google ["boron nitride" gun barrel bullet] and the first link will take you to a lively discussion of folks' experiences.

since you work with this stuff, do you have an answer to hawcer's above questions?

First, let me just welcome you to the forum. Curious as to how you found us??

I do have a question to add. Reading up on HBN, I also notice a few other uses. One use I am curious about, Mould and Die release agent.. Would this be used for bullet casting? Applying to the mould to help aid in releasing cast bullets fromt he mould? If so, could you please explain the process of doing this as well??

I know of a few people who coated their bullets with molly. they claimed to have much better performance. But I also heard there were cons to the deal. Can anyone tell me what the negatives are and if you think that the same negatives would apply with the Boron?

my hopes in asking BN_man ,being that he says it is his company, would that he would actually provide us with the answer. He has been back online since these questions were asked directly towards him, yet he has not given us an answer. I sure hope this isn't one of them google searches to see who is asking about the product and then squeaze in an advertisement not to give us answers to questions...

BN_man, can you please provide us with answers to the questions asked?
